Driverless 18-Wheelers? Baytown's IKEA Distribution Center Is Part of the Plan!
Imagine seeing an 18-wheeler traveling down a Texas highway with nobody behind the wheel!
That could soon become a reality as Kodiak AI prepares to launch driverless trucking operations along Interstate 45 between Houston and Dallas.
And there's a local connection! IKEA's Baytown distribution center is part of an established freight route serving the retailer's store in Frisco. Kodiak has already transported more than 1,300 loads of IKEA merchandise along the route using autonomous technology, with a safety observer aboard.
In an October 30th announcement, Kodiak reported reaching 99% completion of its long-haul safety assessment documentation. The company hopes to begin operating trucks without anyone in the cab before the end of 2026, once its safety validation is complete.
The initial driverless highway route will cover approximately 219 miles between Houston and Dallas.
Would you feel comfortable sharing the highway with an 18-wheeler that has no driver?
π Your Turn! What Do YOU Think?
An 18-wheeler cruising down the highway with nobody behind the wheel? That's going to take some getting used to!
We want to hear from you! Take our quick poll below and tell us how you'd feel sharing the road with a driverless truck. Don't worry no parallel parking test required! π
