☕ Good Morning & Happy Wednesday!

We’ve made it to the middle of the week — and apparently today comes with snacks.

October 7 is National Chocolate Covered Pretzel Day🥨 , celebrating that hard-to-beat combination of salty, crunchy and sweet. It’s also National Frappe Day🥤, so if a cold, blended coffee drink is more your style, today has you covered there, too.

And since it’s Wednesday, here’s your midweek reminder: not every day has to be exciting to be a good one. Sometimes a perfectly ordinary Wednesday — a little cooler morning, a good cup of coffee, something sweet and a few things crossed off the list — is just fine.

We hope you find a little something to enjoy today. Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Barbers Hill ISD Selected for
State Spending Review

Barbers Hill ISD is one of four Texas school districts selected for a financial performance review by the Texas Comptroller's Office.

Texas Comptroller Don Huffines announced Monday that Barbers Hill, Austin, El Paso and Prosper ISDs will undergo reviews examining how district funds are being spent.

The reviews were requested by Gov. Greg Abbott in August and will examine whether district spending complies with state law and whether education funds are being directed toward students, classrooms and teachers.

Barbers Hill ISD has recently faced questions from state lawmakers regarding its financial relationship with the Barbers Hill ISD Education Foundation. During an August legislative hearing, Superintendent Greg Poole defended the district's arrangement with the foundation and said the district had not done anything illegal.

The Comptroller's review is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, with findings provided ahead of the next legislative session.

The review concerns district finances and spending and is separate from the state's academic accountability system. Barbers Hill ISD and all of its campuses received an A in the state's 2025 accountability ratings.

SH-146 Southbound in La Porte
Closing Overnight Wednesday

Drivers who use SH-146 through La Porte should be aware of an overnight closure planned for Wednesday night.

TxDOT has scheduled a total closure of the SH-146 southbound mainlanes from Spencer Highway to Wharton Weems beginning at 9 p.m. Wednesday, October 7th, through 5 a.m. Thursday, October 8.

Southbound traffic will exit at Spencer Highway and follow the frontage road through the Spencer Highway, Fairmont Parkway and Wharton Weems intersections before re-entering SH-146 at the Wharton Weems entrance ramp.

Advance warning signs are in place, and officers are expected to assist with traffic control.

Drivers traveling through the area Wednesday night should allow extra time and be prepared for delays.

Nurture Nature Festival
Returns This Saturday

One of Baytown's biggest outdoor family events is almost here! The Nurture Nature Festival returns this Saturday, October 10, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Baytown Nature Center.

The free, come-and-go festival gives families a chance to explore the outdoors while learning about the wildlife and wetlands that make our area unique.

Activities include live animal encounters, stage shows, children's games, inflatables, bungee jumps, archery, a kid fishing tank, educational exhibits, food and more.

This year's festival also falls on World Migratory Bird Day, making it a perfect time to learn more about the thousands of migratory birds that pass through the Baytown area each fall.

Admission is free and no tickets are required. Because parking at the Nature Center is limited, a small fee applies for on-site parking. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at West Town Shopping Center, 4220 Decker Drive.

🎥 Watch the video below for a preview of this year's Nurture Nature Festival.

Last Quiz: What unusual defense mechanism helps the hoatzin, also known as the "stinkbird," avoid predators?
Answer: B) The hoatzin uses a foul, manure-like odor—produced by a cow-like digestive system that ferments leaves in an oversized crop—which deters humans and other predators from hunting it.
