A father was killed and his 19-year-old daughter critically injured in a shooting Monday morning in the Baytown area, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded around 5:47 a.m. to the 5400 block of North Redell Road, where they found both victims suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The father was pronounced dead at the scene, while his daughter was flown by Life Flight to a hospital in critical condition.

Homicide detectives and crime scene investigators responded to the scene. Authorities have not released details about what led to the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing.

The unusual structure of the Barbers Hill ISD Education Foundation, which has grown to approximately $200 million in assets, is drawing scrutiny from state lawmakers and education officials.

Houston Public Media reports that lawmakers questioned Superintendent Greg Poole during an August legislative hearing about the relationship between the school district and its education foundation, including the transfer and investment of district funds, board structure, potential conflicts of interest and transparency requirements.

The Texas Education Agency has an open investigation into the district's relationship with the foundation, according to the report.

Poole and Barbers Hill ISD maintain that the district and foundation have acted legally and with guidance from legal counsel. The district says the foundation was created as a long-term financial strategy to benefit Barbers Hill ISD.
