September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, learn the warning signs and remind people that help is available.

You don't have to be a mental health professional to make a difference. Sometimes it begins with noticing that someone isn't acting like themselves — and taking the time to check in.

Warning signs can include talking about feeling hopeless, trapped or like a burden; withdrawing from family and friends; extreme mood changes; increased alcohol or drug use; unusual agitation or reckless behavior; significant changes in sleeping habits; or talking about wanting to die.

If you're worried about someone, don't be afraid to ask directly if they're thinking about suicide. Listen without judging or lecturing, take what they say seriously, stay connected and help them reach appropriate support.

The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline recommends five simple steps when someone may be struggling:

Ask. Be there. Help keep them safe. Help them connect. Follow up.

And 988 isn't only for someone who is considering suicide. Anyone experiencing emotional distress — or someone concerned about a friend or loved one — can contact the Lifeline for guidance and support.

Sometimes checking on someone takes only a few minutes. A phone call, a text, an invitation for coffee or a simple “I've noticed you haven't seemed like yourself lately. How are you doing?” can open a door someone may not know how to open on their own.

This September, it's a good reminder for all of us: pay attention, check in and don't be afraid to start the conversation.

La Porte is turning back the clock for a milestone celebration! The annual Health & Safety Fair is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year with a “Back to the Nineties” theme — and families are invited to join the fun by showing up in their favorite ’90s style.

The free community event is set for Sat., September 2th, from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at La Porte High School, with more than 100 exhibits offering health and safety information for all ages.

Visitors can expect free health screenings, child ID kits, a rock wall, a bike safety exhibit and children's bike raffle, along with demonstrations and displays from local community and industry partners. Police, fire, EMS, Public Works and other emergency-response vehicles and equipment will also be on display outside.

The first 500 children attending will receive a free Safety Fair T-shirt, and door prizes will be given away throughout the event.

For the 30th-anniversary celebration, attendees are encouraged to have a little fun with the theme by wearing ’90s-inspired clothing or an old Safety Fair shirt if they have one.
