Large Plume of Black Smoke Seen
During Flaring at Baytown Facility
A large plume of black smoke and visible flames drew attention in Baytown Wednesday evening following a flaring event at the Raven Butene-1 facility along the East Freeway.
Officials said a power outage caused a brief “process upset” at the facility, resulting in the flaring and smoke that could be seen for miles. The event was temporary, and by around 7 p.m., the visible smoke and ground-level flames had stopped.
No injuries, damage or safety issues were reported.

New La Porte City Hall Opens Monday;
Grand Opening Set for Sept. 14th
The City of La Porte is moving into its new home.
Beginning Monday, Aug. 31st, daily city business, utility billing and resident services will officially move into the new La Porte City Hall. Residents won't have to learn a new address—the new building is still at 604 W. Fairmont Parkway, right next door to the previous facility.
While the doors open for business Monday, the city is saving the celebration for Monday, Sept. 14th. Grand opening activities begin at 5:45 p.m., followed by the official ceremony and ribbon-cutting at 6 p.m. The community is invited to tour the new building and, yes, there will be cake. 🍰
City Council will meet that evening at a specially adjusted time of 7 p.m.
And the move will have a couple of bonuses for bargain hunters: surplus items from the transition will be offered first at a Sept. 18 repurposing event for local nonprofits, followed by a public surplus garage sale Sept. 19. More details on those events are expected later.
