National Dog Day is a time to celebrate the four-legged family members who already share our homes — but it's also a good day to remember the dogs still waiting for someone to take them home.

Meet Almond, an 8-plus-year-old, 34-pound senior currently in foster care through the City of La Porte Adoption Center & Animal Shelter. Shelter staff describe this older gentleman as calm and sweet, saying he would much rather spend his evenings cuddling on a couch than waiting for his forever family. Because Almond is currently in foster care, those interested in meeting him should contact the shelter to arrange a visit.

Over at City of Baytown Animal Services & Adoption Center, Kujo is an estimated 6-year-old German Shepherd mix who loves people and playing fetch. He knows “sit” and “paw,” and shelter staff say he's an active, driven dog who needs an opportunity to get out of the kennel environment. Kujo is looking for either a foster or an adopter.

And don't forget our neighbors at the City of Mont Belvieu Animal Shelter. Its current adoptable-dog listings include Topsy, Humphrey, Winter and Dinah, among others. The shelter also offers fostering for people who aren't ready to make a permanent commitment.

Not ready to adopt? Fostering, volunteering, donating supplies or simply sharing an adoptable dog's picture can help, too. Baytown, La Porte and Mont Belvieu all offer ways for local residents to help animals in their care.

A former Liberty County Sheriff's Office deputy has been arrested after being indicted on nine charges, including seven related to child pornography.

The Liberty County Sheriff's Office said Ralmond Winkler Jr. was fired Aug. 19th following the indictment and turned himself in Friday. Authorities said they first received information in May that Winkler could be involved in criminal activity, and he was placed on administrative leave in June.

Court records show Winkler also faces a charge of tampering with a government record and another charge involving allegations that he misused his position as a deputy.

The Texas Rangers conducted an independent investigation into the allegations and said the investigation remains ongoing.

The City of Baytown's recent Back-2-School Fair helped local students get ready for the new school year, distributing 1,432 backpacks filled with school supplies.

The event welcomed 1,255 attendees and included 14 community vendors offering information and resources related to healthcare, education, social services and other community needs.

City officials thanked the participating vendors and volunteers who helped make the event possible, with special recognition given to Sharon Rose, Monica Fabela and Stephany Medina for their work planning and organizing the fair.
