As part of National Preparedness Month in September, the Baytown Office of Emergency Management is teaming up with the National Weather Service to offer Skywarn Storm Spotter training.

The training gives participants an opportunity to learn more about severe thunderstorms, dangerous weather and the warning signs trained storm spotters look for when storms develop.

Skywarn spotters can provide valuable on-the-ground observations during severe weather, helping the National Weather Service better understand what's happening in local communities.

Residents interested in learning more about severe weather and becoming better prepared when storms threaten the area are invited to participate.

Get ready for a day in the great outdoors! Baytown’s annual Nurture Nature Festival returns Saturday, October 10th, from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. at the Baytown Nature Center.

The free, come-and-go festival will feature live animal encounters, stage shows, children’s games, inflatables, bungee jumps, archery, a kid fish tank, educational exhibits, food and more. Visitors will also have a chance to learn about the reptiles, birds, fish and native plants found right here in the Baytown area.

This year’s festival falls on World Migratory Bird Day, a fitting celebration for Baytown, where thousands of migrating birds stop along local wetlands and shorelines during their fall journey. Visitors can learn about migration and the Lights Out, Texas! effort to help protect birds traveling through the state.

Admission is free and no ticket is required. A small fee will apply for parking at the Nature Center. Free parking and shuttle service will be available at West Town Shopping Center, 4220 Decker Drive.

Baytown’s award-winning Grito Fest returns to Bicentennial Park on Saturday, October 3rd, bringing a free celebration of Hispanic heritage, music, traditions and community.

Hosted by the City of Baytown and the Grito Fest Committee, the festival will feature De Parranda, along with Mariachi, Ballet Folklórico and Regional Mexican and Latin music. Visitors can also enjoy food, cultural vendors, festival activities and giveaways.

Some of the biggest crowd participation comes from the festival’s competitions, including Grito Shouting, Jalapeño Eating and Accordion Playing.

The event has earned statewide recognition, receiving a 2025 Texas Travel Award for Small to Mid-Market Community Event.

Grito Fest takes place at Bicentennial Park, 1001 Market St. Guests are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets, and public parking is generally available across the street at Lee College.

The celebration actually gets started a day early with a Grito Fest Pre-Party on Friday, October 2nd, at 6 p.m. at Baytown Town Square, featuring art, music, food, dancing and more Hispanic culture.
