Repairs are continuing at the Liberty County Jail as officials work to address deficiencies identified during a state inspection earlier this year.

During a recent Liberty County Commissioners Court meeting, Sheriff Bobby Rader said significant progress has been made since the Texas Commission on Jail Standards cited the facility for several compliance issues in May. Among the concerns were malfunctioning door locks, damaged lighting, missing intercom systems, and problems with the jail's smoke management system.

According to the sheriff, repairs to the jail's fire restoration work are nearly complete, with only two doors remaining. He also told commissioners that replacement door locks arrived in mid-July and crews have been working extended hours to install them as quickly as possible.

The jail has faced several challenges over the past two years, including a fire in 2025 that injured correctional officers and previous state compliance concerns. Earlier this year, however, state officials approved plans for a new Liberty County jail that is expected to help address overcrowding and modernize the aging facility.

County officials say they will continue working to bring the current jail into compliance while planning for the future facility.

Students and visitors will no longer be allowed to bring e-bikes or electric scooters onto Barbers Hill ISD property beginning with the 2026-27 school year.

District officials announced the new policy this week, citing the growing popularity of e-bikes and electric scooters among students and increasing concerns about safety around campuses, parking lots, sidewalks, and nearby roadways.

"Our first responsibility is to protect the safety of our students, staff, and visitors," Superintendent Greg Poole said in the district's announcement. He said the district carefully evaluated the issue before deciding that prohibiting the devices on school property was the best way to help prevent a serious accident.

The new rule applies to all Barbers Hill ISD campuses and district facilities. Students, parents, and visitors are asked not to ride or bring e-bikes or electric scooters onto district property.

The district says the policy is intended to improve safety as the new school year gets underway.

Barbers Hill ISD is encouraging all families to complete a school meal application, even if they don't think they'll qualify for free or reduced-price meals.

District officials say the application serves several important purposes beyond determining meal eligibility. Information from the applications helps schools receive funding for educational programs and student services, while eligible families may also qualify for benefits such as reduced college application fees, SAT and ACT exam fee waivers, and other assistance.

The district notes that only one application is needed per household, and it takes less than 10 minutes to complete online.

School officials say completing a meal application helps ensure students, families, and the district receive every available benefit.
