The former executive director of the Anahuac Area Chamber of Commerce has been indicted by a Chambers County grand jury on allegations that she misappropriated funds connected to the community's longtime Texas Gatorfest.

Authorities allege the amount involved is between $30,000 and $150,000, although investigators say the total could be higher as the investigation continues. The former director was arrested, later posted bond and was released. The charge is a third-degree felony.

The financial problems led to the cancellation of this year's Texas Gatorfest, one of Chambers County's largest annual events and an important fundraiser for the community. Investigators say additional financial records are still being reviewed, and officials have indicated that more charges or additional people could become part of the ongoing investigation.

The indictment marks a significant step in the criminal investigation, but the case is still moving through the court system. Under the law, the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Investigators say they are continuing to review financial records as the case moves forward, while community leaders work toward bringing a successor event back at a later date.

A proposed renewable energy facility planned for the Cedar Port area of Baytown has reached another milestone as developers continue moving the project toward construction.

Abundia Global Impact Group announced this week that a key phase of engineering has been completed for its planned facility, which is designed to convert waste plastics into low-carbon fuels and chemical products. The milestone allows engineers to move into the next stage of planning as the company continues developing the project.

The proposed facility is expected to process up to 80,000 tons of waste plastic each year, transforming materials that might otherwise end up in landfills into products such as renewable fuels and chemical feedstocks. Company officials say additional engineering, financing and regulatory work must still be completed before a final decision is made to begin construction.

The announcement does not mean construction is about to begin. Instead, it marks another planning milestone for a project that could bring additional industrial investment and future jobs to the Baytown area if it ultimately moves forward.

The company says the next step is completing the remaining engineering work before making a final investment decision on whether to build the facility.

The ensemble is led by a former Lee High School and Lee College Jazz Band member and places a special emphasis on giving students additional opportunities to grow as musicians.

Rehearsals begin Tuesday, September 15th, and will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mockingbird Room at the Baytown Community Center.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments and equipment.
