Baytown residents are getting their first detailed look at what could become one of the city's most significant community projects in years.

The City of Baytown has released new schematic renderings of the proposed ExxonMobil Baytown Events Center (EMBEC) and the renovated Sterling Municipal Library, showing how the two facilities could come together as one connected community campus. The plans were recently presented to City Council and reflect ideas gathered from a public forum and more than 700 community surveys.

The proposed events center is designed to be much more than a sports facility. Current plans include flexible courts for basketball, volleyball and pickleball tournaments, while also allowing the space to host concerts, expos, community celebrations and other large events. The concept also includes meeting rooms, concessions, indoor play areas and room for future fitness and wellness partners.

The library renovation would expand children's and teen spaces while adding new meeting rooms, coworking areas, a technology hub, podcasting space, a makerspace and stronger connections to outdoor gathering areas.

City officials emphasize that these are schematic designs, meaning the project will continue to evolve as planning moves forward.

Residents who would like a closer look at the renderings can attend the Design Showcase on Thursday, July 30th, at 6 p.m., Baytown Community Center Auditorium, 2407 Market Street.

Baytown has another locally owned business to celebrate!

Snob's Coffee has officially opened its first permanent coffee shop at 507 W. Baker Road, giving customers a welcoming new place to grab their favorite cup of coffee without leaving town.

The company, which started in 2021, proudly brews and roasts its coffee right here in Baytown. Its new location is housed in a remodeled former bank building and even features a convenient drive-thru for customers on the go.

We stopped by recently, and one thing stood out right away—the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It's always exciting to see a local business grow, and we're happy to welcome Snob's Coffee to the Baytown business community.

Baytown, La Porte and nearby communities are among the beneficiaries of the Port of Houston's 2026 Community Grants Program, with several local organizations receiving funding to expand programs that support housing, education, workforce development, the arts and STEM learning.

In all, the Port of Houston awarded $500,000 to 32 organizations serving communities along the Houston Ship Channel region. The grants support projects focused on workforce training, education, neighborhood improvement, health, environmental stewardship and other community needs. This year's program drew 194 applications requesting more than $6.6 million, highlighting the strong demand for community investment across the region.

Here are the organizations in the Baytown Local News & Events coverage area that received funding:

Baytown Habitat for Humanity — $15,000
The nonprofit will use the grant to expand its Safe and Stable Homes Repair & Resilience Initiative, providing critical home repairs for approximately 40 to 60 residents living near the Houston Ship Channel. Projects may include accessibility improvements, structural repairs, weatherization and energy-efficiency upgrades.

Art League of Baytown — $7,250
The Arts and the Ship Channel project will invite local artists to create works exploring the relationship between nature and industry along the Houston Ship Channel. The exhibit aims to increase appreciation for the area's unique environment and history.

Lee College Foundation — $20,000
Funding will help expand online simulation software and industry-based training for Lee College's Logistics & Supply Chain Management program. Students will gain hands-on experience with trucking and intermodal transportation systems that support port operations, helping prepare them for careers in the regional workforce.

Career Gear Houston — $15,000
Serving students in Baytown, La Porte and Pasadena, Career Gear Houston will establish on-campus professional clothing boutiques at Lee College and San Jacinto College's Maritime and Central campuses. The program also provides career readiness resources to help students prepare for job interviews and future employment.

La Porte ISD — $15,000
The district will use the grant to expand its Elementary STEM Academies from serving students in grades 3 and 4 to all PK-5 students districtwide, giving more children access to hands-on science, technology, engineering and math learning opportunities.

Port Houston says its Community Grants Program is designed to strengthen the communities surrounding the Houston Ship Channel by partnering with local nonprofits, schools and community organizations working to improve quality of life. Since the program began in 2020, Port Houston has invested millions of dollars in projects that support residents throughout the region.
