While this story comes from neighboring Kemah, it's one many readers across our area will enjoy. Jordan Wilmore, who stands 7 feet 3 inches tall, has officially been sworn in as the newest officer with the Kemah Police Department after overcoming setbacks and refusing to give up on his dream of serving in law enforcement.

Wilmore initially fell short on his state licensing exam but persevered, passed on a later attempt, and graduated from the police academy. His determination even earned encouragement from NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal, who promised him a custom patrol vehicle once he became an officer. Known as a "gentle giant," Wilmore says he wants to be remembered not for his height, but for making a positive difference in the community. He begins patrol duties this week.

Celebrate Parks & Recreation Month with a fun outdoor adventure at the Little Cedar Bayou Nature Trail in La Porte on Friday, July 10th! Participants can pick up a clue sheet at the La Porte Parks & Recreation Dept. Desk, follow the clues to complete five challenges along the trail, and return their completed sheet by the end of the day to earn a prize.

Want an extra challenge? The first five participants to finish and turn in their completed clue sheets will also receive an exclusive La Porte Parks & Recreation T-shirt.

It's a great way for families, friends, and nature lovers to get outside, explore one of La Porte's beautiful parks, and enjoy a little friendly competition.

Looking for a fun and relaxing family activity this weekend? The Evening Explorers Walk returns to the Baytown Nature Center on this Saturday, July 11th, giving families a chance to experience nature as the sun begins to set.

Designed especially for children ages 3 and up, this easy, one-hour guided walk runs from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. and encourages young explorers to discover the sights and sounds of the outdoors in a calm, unhurried setting.

Admission is $2.50 per person, and space is limited, so advance registration is recommended.
