26-Year-Old Woman Found Dead
in Crosby; Suspect in Custody

A 26-year-old woman was found dead early Sunday morning after deputies responded to a shooting call in the Crosby area.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 4:15 a.m. to the 3000 block of Kennings Road near Bohemian Hall Road. When they arrived, they discovered Myrtle Spells, 26, dead inside the home with gunshot wounds.

Authorities say the homeowner initially told 911 that someone entered the house, attacked him, and shot his girlfriend. However, investigators later identified Christopher Thomas, 49, who was reportedly in a dating relationship with Spells, as the suspect.

Thomas has been charged with murder in connection with the case and was booked into the Harris County Jail. The investigation remains ongoing.

Houston SPCA Investigates
Severe Animal Hoarding
Case in Baytown

Animal cruelty investigators with the Houston SPCA, working with the Harris County Constable’s Office Precinct 1, responded to a severe animal hoarding case at a home in the Ginger Creek Estates subdivision in Baytown.

Authorities rescued four cats from extremely unsanitary and hazardous conditions inside the home. Investigators also discovered four additional cats deceased, including skeletal remains found in the garage. Officials reported the home contained piles of animal feces, debris, and clutter throughout the residence.

The surviving cats are now receiving treatment at the Houston SPCA animal hospital for dehydration, flea infestations, open wounds, lethargy, and severe weight loss.

A court hearing is expected within the next week to determine legal custody of the animals as the investigation continues.

The Houston SPCA is encouraging residents to report suspected animal cruelty so animals in need can receive help quickly.

Baytown Approves Ordinances
to Allow Alcohol at
Certain City Event Venues

The Baytown City Council has approved new ordinances designed to make the city more attractive for tourism and large events at city parks.

The changes allow alcohol to be sold and consumed at city-owned or controlled properties during properly permitted tourism or sports tourism events. The policy applies only to third-party events and not to regular Parks and Recreation activities.

Under the new rules, event organizers must obtain all required permits and comply with Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission (TABC) regulations. Organizers will also be responsible for following city policies and managing alcohol sales during their events.

The council also approved updates to park hours for certain permitted tourism events. This change allows activities to continue past the normal 10 p.m. closing time if needed, such as during rain delays or extra innings at sporting events.

Another ordinance allows vendors to sell merchandise at approved events. For example, organizers could sell items like hats, shirts, or souvenirs during games or races.

City officials say the goal is to help Baytown attract events such as collegiate sports leagues, marathons, and other tourism-focused activities while maintaining oversight and protecting nearby neighborhoods.

Last Quiz: What is the only metal that is liquid at standard room temperature?
Answer: B. Mercury
Mercury is the only metal that remains liquid at standard room temperature. Gallium and cesium can melt near room temperature but are normally solid under standard conditions. Bromine is also liquid at room temperature but is not a metal — it’s a halogen element.
