Baytown Man Killed in
Motorcycle Crash Hours
After Meeting New Granddaughter

A Baytown family is mourning the loss of Joseph Smith, a beloved grandfather who was killed in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash along I-10 on the night of February 9th.

Family members say Smith had spent part of the day meeting his newborn granddaughter for the first time before the crash occurred.

Authorities say he was the only person involved, and the incident remains under investigation by the Houston Police Department.

A fundraiser has been created to help support Smith's family during this difficult time.

World Cup Boost:
8 New Soccer Fields
Planned for Baytown

Baytown is set to gain eight new soccer fields at the Baytown Soccer Complex as part of Harris County’s FREEKICKS Soccer Program ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2026™. The agreement, approved by Commissioners Court, will enhance 25 soccer fields across the county.

Fields selected for improvements include:

Precinct 1: Alabonson Park (3 fields) and Blue Ridge Park (2 fields)
Precinct 2: Moody Park (4 fields) and Keith-Wiess Park (4 fields)
Precinct 3: 8 new fields at Baytown Soccer Complex
Precinct 4: George Bush Park (4 fields)

County leaders say the upgrades aim to grow youth soccer participation while preparing for the World Cup, which is expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors and significant economic impact to the region.

Cleanup Underway After
Storm-Toppled Tree
Causes Oil Spill in Crosby

Cleanup efforts are underway in Crosby after a tree knocked down during severe storms struck an Energy Transfer pipeline valve Saturday night, causing about 150 gallons of crude oil to spill.

The incident occurred near the 16700 block of Golf Club Drive. Authorities briefly issued a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents as a precaution while hazmat crews isolated the leak and conducted air monitoring.

Officials say the oil did not reach nearby homes or bodies of water and extended only about 10 feet from the facility’s fence line. No injuries were reported, and the shelter-in-place order was later lifted.
