Brush Fire Burns Hundreds
of Acres North of Dayton
An uncontrolled brush fire is burning several hundred acres north of Dayton, according to the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire is located near County Road 677, west of CR 321. Crews were reported on scene around 4:01 p.m., and mutual aid has been requested to help contain the blaze.
Authorities are urging residents to use caution in the area and watch for emergency responders. No information has been released about the cause of the fire or when it may be fully contained.
DOJ Reaches $68M Settlement
With Colony Ridge
The U.S. Department of Justice announced that Colony Ridge Land LLC, a developer in Liberty County, has agreed to pay $68 million to settle a lawsuit over alleged predatory land sales and lending practices.
Federal investigators said the company targeted Hispanic borrowers with misleading ads and seller-financed loans that did not properly verify a buyer’s ability to repay. The lawsuit claimed the practices led to high foreclosure rates and financial hardship.
Under the settlement, Colony Ridge will invest $48 million in infrastructure improvements, including $18 million for drainage. The company must also adopt stricter lending standards, reduce foreclosures, improve advertising accuracy, and invest $20 million in increased law enforcement presence.
The agreement resolves lawsuits filed by federal and Texas officials.
