Liberty County Approves $100M
Jail to Address Overcrowding

Liberty County officials have approved plans to build a new $100 million jail to address ongoing overcrowding and safety concerns.

The current jail is more than 30 years old. In April 2025, a fire hospitalized five correctional officers, and state officials later ordered the facility to close following years of reported violations. While county leaders say many issues have since been addressed, overcrowding has continued to worsen.

According to the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, the jail averaged about 200 inmates last year, with an additional 119 housed in other counties each day at a cost of roughly $3.5 million annually.

Commissioners approved the new facility in December. The jail is expected to hold 600 inmates, with room to expand. Construction could begin in September, with completion projected in about two years.

Last Quiz: Which band performed the halftime show at Super Bowl I in 1967?
Answer: C) University marching bands
The first Super Bowl didn’t feature a major pop act. Instead, marching bands from the University of Arizona and Grambling State University performed — a big contrast to today’s superstar halftime shows.
