Dayton Expands as Shipping Hub
with New Foreign-Trade Zone

A major shipping and logistics company has expanded its Dayton operations with a new Foreign-Trade Zone that could help move cargo faster and lower costs for businesses.

Bennett and BOSS Companies recently added a 15-acre Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) at their facility along Highway 146 in Dayton. The site already includes an 80-acre yard and office space and now gives companies another option for storing imported equipment.

So what’s a Foreign-Trade Zone? Think of it as a special storage area where companies can bring in equipment from overseas without paying taxes or tariffs right away. They only pay those fees when the items are actually used, which can save businesses a lot of money upfront.

The Dayton FTZ will store large equipment such as industrial coolers, pipe materials, lithium batteries, and other cargo coming through Gulf Coast ports. The location helps move goods more easily between ports and inland project sites.

Company leaders say the expansion allows shipping, transportation, and customs paperwork to be handled in one place, helping customers stay on schedule. The project also reflects continued growth in Gulf Coast energy and industrial development.

Baytown Police Department Investigating Homicide
The Baytown Police Department is investigating a homicide involving 32-year-old Jerome Harris of Louisiana.
On Saturday, January 31, 2025, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Baytown Police officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1700 block of James Bowie Drive in reference to an unresponsive male.

Upon arrival, Baytown Fire Department paramedics were providing lifesaving measures. Baytown Police Crime Scene personnel and detectives responded to process the scene. The male was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators have determined the cause of death to be a gunshot wound. This incident remains under investigation.

Anyone with information related to this case is urged to come forward. Any information, no matter how small, may be crucial in providing answers and closure to the victim’s loved ones.

Baytown Parks & Recreation Scores
Double Win at Regional Awards

Congratulations to Baytown Parks and Recreation for earning two regional honors from the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) East Region in 2025.

The department received the Aquatics Photography Award for “A Worry-Free Day at Pirates Bay,” captured by Amy Shipley. The photo highlights the family-friendly experience enjoyed by visitors at Pirates Bay Waterpark and showcases the welcoming atmosphere the park is known for.

Baytown Parks and Recreation also earned the Maintenance of the Year Award for its solar lighting project, which improved safety and accessibility in neighborhood parks. The project also reduced costs by being completed in-house by department staff.

This marks the department’s second consecutive Maintenance of the Year recognition, following its 2024 award. Officials say the honors reflect the team’s ongoing commitment to improving parks and recreational spaces for the community.
