Construction Worker Killed in
Crosby Freeway Crash,
Second Worker Critically Injured

A construction worker was killed and another was critically injured Friday night after being struck by a vehicle while working on Crosby Freeway in Harris County.

According to the Harris County Sheriff's Office, the crash happened in the 3000 block of Crosby Freeway near FM 2100. The two workers were stripping pavement lane markings at the time. One lane was closed and another partially blocked during the work.

Investigators said a 21-year-old driver appeared to swerve out of his lane and struck the workers. Authorities said the driver was not believed to be intoxicated and remained at the scene to cooperate with law enforcement.

The workers, ages 32 and 40, were flown to a nearby hospital. The younger worker was later pronounced dead. The older worker was listed in critical but stable condition at the time of publication.

The crash remains under investigation.

New Findings Challenge the
Legend of ‘Walking Tall’
Sheriff Buford Pusser

Editors Note: We’re sharing this because we know many longtime readers may remember the story, and others may find the reexamination of a once-familiar headline worth a closer look.

He was once portrayed as a real-life action hero — a small-town sheriff whose story inspired hit movies, books, and stage productions. For decades, Buford Pusser was remembered as a tough-on-crime lawman whose life became the basis for Walking Tall and a larger-than-life folk legend.

At the center of that legend was the 1967 killing of his wife, Pauline, a crime long blamed on shadowy enemies tied to organized crime. But recent investigative findings are now challenging that narrative.

A cold-case review using modern forensic analysis has identified inconsistencies between Pusser’s account and physical evidence from the scene. Investigators say blood-spatter patterns and wound analysis contradict the long-accepted version of events.

Authorities now believe that if Pusser were alive today, there would be probable cause to pursue criminal charges against him. The reassessment is reshaping how one of America’s most famous law-and-order stories is understood.

The findings are explored in this magazine article and the video below:
