Update: UH Credit Union Robbery
Suspect’s Criminal History
Spans Multiple Counties

New court records are providing additional insight into the criminal history of the man accused of carrying out an armed robbery at a credit union on the University of Houston campus earlier this month.

Jerome Ruben, 24, appeared in court this week following his arrest in connection with the Jan. 7 robbery at the on-campus TDECU credit union. Authorities allege Ruben fled the scene in a vehicle that was later located during a traffic stop two days after the robbery. Law enforcement officials say investigators recovered items believed to have been used during the robbery, along with a large amount of cash.

According to court documents, Ruben has a criminal history spanning multiple counties.

Records from Galveston County show prior misdemeanor and traffic-related cases, as well as a 2022 burglary conviction that resulted in probation. Court filings indicate that probation was later revoked, and Ruben served time in jail.

In Harris County, court records show Ruben was previously accused in a separate armed robbery case involving a delivery driver. He was again placed on probation, which was later violated. As part of those conditions, Ruben was reportedly prohibited from entering the University of Houston campus.

Court records also show Ruben is accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a woman in Baytown in December while he was on probation for a prior offense. In that case, he now faces charges including aggravated kidnapping, aggravated sexual assault, and aggravated robbery.

In the University of Houston credit union case, Ruben has been charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. A judge set bond at $2 million for that charge. An additional $3 million bond was set in the Baytown case, bringing his total bond to $5 million.

Ruben’s next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 17. Both cases remain under investigation.

K-9 Enzo and K-9 Big
Retire From Baytown
Police Department

Two longtime police service dogs with the Baytown Police Department have officially retired and will remain with the handlers who worked alongside them throughout their careers.

K-9 Enzo and K-9 Big both concluded their service due to age, health, or length of duty after years assisting officers with patrol operations, suspect apprehension, detection work, and public safety efforts in Baytown.

Under Texas law, retired law enforcement animals may be transferred to eligible individuals. In both cases, the dogs were approved to be turned over to their assigned handlers — Officer Cody Dodson for K-9 Enzo and Officer Jeff Spencer for K-9 Big — based on their demonstrated care, responsibility, and dedication to the animals’ well-being.

Department officials said the retirements allow both dogs to transition from active duty into a well-earned next chapter, remaining with the officers who partnered with them throughout their service.
