City of Baytown Announces Selected Architect for the Events Center

The City of Baytown issued a Project Update for the ExxonMobil Baytown Events Center. The City has selected Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture (BRS) as its architect for the ExxonMobil Baytown Events Center (EMBEC), and the agreement will go before the city council for consideration at its January 8 meeting. After an open nationwide search, BRS was selected to design the facility, together with the Sterling Municipal Library, at the intersection of Market Street, Texas Avenue, and Decker Drive. The contract price is set at $5,352,805, and the expense will be deducted from the ExxonMobil contribution for the project.

The EMBEC facility will host a wide variety of sports, including basketball, volleyball, pickleball, cheerleading, wrestling, dance, gymnastics, and more, positioning this facility as a premier destination for youth and adult tournaments. Beyond sporting events, this multiple-purpose venue will be able to accommodate concerts, family shows, meetings, exhibitions, consumer expos, and community events, offering a versatile space for a wide range of indoor activities.

The proposed interior and exterior renovation of the Sterling Municipal Library envisions a state-of-the-art library, integrated with the EMBEC facility to form a cohesive campus destination.

The preliminary schedule for the design portion of the project is set at 36 months, and includes community and stakeholder engagement, design development and drafting of construction documents, permitting, and construction bidding and administration.

Harris County Deputy Accused
of Assaulting Three Nurses
at Baytown Hospital

A Harris County Precinct 3 deputy constable is facing multiple felony assault charges following an alleged attack on three nurses at Houston Methodist Baytown Hospital on New Year’s Day, according to court records.

Investigators say Robert Earl Nobles Jr., 42, had been admitted to the hospital and was waiting to undergo an MRI when the incident occurred. Charging documents state a nurse went to check on Nobles after his bed alert activated and heard yelling inside his room. After another nurse left, Nobles allegedly approached the responding nurse and suddenly charged at her, striking her in the face and knocking her to the floor.

Authorities say Nobles then ran toward a second nurse, who was 26 weeks pregnant, and allegedly struck her with a printer before slamming a computer monitor onto her back while she was on the ground. Nobles is also accused of punching a third nurse in the back of the head near the ICU area, causing her to briefly lose consciousness.

Nobles was later sedated under a doctor’s orders and detained on a gurney. Police were unable to obtain a statement at the time.

According to the Harris County Precinct 3 Constable’s Office, Nobles has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal affairs investigation. Court records show he is charged with three felony counts of assault on hospital personnel.

Residents Say Hidden Water Issue
Is Driving Up Bills
in Baytown Neighborhood

Residents in a Baytown neighborhood say they are frustrated by unexplained pools of water appearing in their yards — a problem some believe is driving unusually high water bills.

Several homeowners report soggy ground and standing water despite not increasing water use or running sprinklers. In some cases, residents say their bills have jumped to 10 or even 20 times their normal amount, with one topping $1,400. Some homeowners also report hearing water beneath the ground and being told their usage showed tens of thousands of gallons.

Residents say they’ve contacted builders, plumbers, and their water utility, and some have even had meters replaced, but no clear cause has been identified.

Municipal Utility District 213-A confirmed it is aware of at least one reported case and is investigating, though no timeline has been given. Customers needing more time to pay are encouraged to contact the district.
