12 Arrested in Baytown
Human Trafficking Operation

The Baytown Police Department arrested twelve (12) males during a Human Trafficking Demand-Suppression Operation focused on identifying individuals attempting to solicit sexual services and reducing the demand that contributes to human trafficking.

The operation, conducted by the Baytown Police Department’s Special Investigations Division, targeted online platforms known for prostitution-related activity. All twelve individuals were taken into custody and charged with Solicitation of Prostitution, a State Jail Felony. One individual also faced an Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon charge, and another faced Possession of a Controlled Substance (Methamphetamine) charge.

Chief of Police John Stringer stated: Human trafficking often begins where there is a market for exploitation. By focusing on the demand for illegal sexual services, we’re taking proactive steps to p”otect vulnerable individuals and hold offenders accountable. Our department will continue conducting operations like this to support public safety and reinforce that this conduct has no place in Baytown.

This operation shows our department’s continued commitment to addressing the factors that contribute to human trafficking. Reducing demand is a key step in preventing exploitation and keeping our community safe. Anyone with information about human trafficking or related crimes is encouraged to contact our department at 281-422-8371 or submit a tip online.

New Life for a Familiar
Landmark at Almeda Mall

For many Baytown residents, a trip to Almeda Mall — and especially the old Macy’s — was a shopping tradition that stretched across generations. After the store closed in March 2025 as part of Macy’s national 66-store pullback, longtime visitors felt the loss of a place they had known for decades. Now, a Houston developer is giving the site a new purpose.

Read King, which purchased the 23-acre former Macy’s property in 2024, is moving forward with an ambitious plan to transform the 290,000-square-foot building into The Market at Almeda Mall, a grocery-anchored indoor marketplace featuring retail, restaurants, and services. The property, though connected to the mall, has always been separately owned — giving the developer freedom to reshape the space.

Plans call for a 65,000-square-foot grocery store on the first floor, along with additional restaurant and retail bays lining both sides of the building. Negotiations are underway with a grocer, a fitness center, and a beauty school. Upstairs, about 44,000 square feet will be leased to smaller tenants, with the rest used for utilities due to parking constraints.

Instead of tearing the structure down, Read King chose an adaptive reuse approach, noting the building’s durable construction and high visibility along Interstate 45. Architecture firm Boucher Design Group will reclad the exterior and add new glass storefronts, creating a subtle retro look that nods to the mall’s late-1960s origins.

The developer expects to break ground in early 2026, marking a new chapter for a location full of memories — and soon, fresh possibilities.

Texas Man Saves Two Lives
After Rebuilding His Own

A powerful story out of Ellis County, Texas, is reminding people that a second chance can lead to extraordinary acts of good. According to a report from People, Jacob Bell — who spent nearly 20 years in prison before rebuilding his life — has now saved two people in separate emergencies just weeks apart.

The first rescue happened at Lake Waxahachie, where Bell jumped into action after seeing a young girl struggling in the water. He reached her quickly and pulled her to safety, preventing what could have been a tragic drowning.

Just six weeks later, Bell was driving when he saw an overturned vehicle on fire. Inside was a 72-year-old man who was unresponsive. Bell pulled the man from the wreckage, performed CPR, and stayed with him until help arrived. Authorities later confirmed that his efforts likely saved the man’s life.

Bell told reporters he doesn’t see himself as a hero — only someone determined to do the right thing when he sees someone in danger.
