La Porte Mayor Rick Helton on “Mondays with the Mayor🏢

Nurture Nature Festival is Back!🐢

Good morning Neighbors! Midweek isn’t about grinding through—it’s about resetting your pace. Take a longer inhale than usual, roll your shoulders back, and choose the next right thing. If the breeze shifts or clouds build, keep an umbrella in the car and patience in your pocket. Progress counts, even when it’s quiet.

Rooms To Go Coming to Baytown

A new Rooms To Go is headed to Baytown. The project was announced at the City Council meeting last Thursday [Sept. 11th]. The store will sit along Interstate 10 at the former Big Lots/Toys R Us site, turning a long-empty spot into fresh retail space.

The company plans to tear down and build new, putting up a 45,000-square-foot building. According to the announcement, Rooms To Go expects to invest up to $13 million in the project and will create and maintain at least 17 full-time jobs once the store opens.

City leaders said the deal is set up under a Chapter 380 economic development agreement. In simple terms, that allows the City to offer an incentive if the company meets its goals. Here, the incentive is a sales and use tax rebate that is performance-based and capped at $1 million total over 10 years. If the company doesn’t hit the job and investment targets, the rebate doesn’t get paid.

Supporters say the project brings life back to a visible spot on I-10, adds new jobs, and can help grow sales-tax revenue over time. The performance rules are meant to protect the City by tying the incentive to actual results rather than promises.
