Iconic Sears Site in Houston
to Become New Target
Not in Baytown, but well known across the Greater Houston area, a landmark retail site is about to see new life.
For more than 70 years, the Sears department store at 4000 N. Shepherd Drive in Garden Oaks served as a neighborhood anchor before closing in 2020. The store, which first opened in 1949, was part of many Houstoniansâ memories and was especially recognizable for its art deco-style sign that still stands today.
Now, plans are moving forward for a new $19 million Target store at the location. According to a state filing, the project will be a 129,490-square-foot building, designed by RSP Architects of Minneapolis. Construction is expected to start in April 2026 and wrap up by March 2027, though Target has not officially confirmed the opening.
The transformation follows a broader national trend of converting aging big-box stores into modern retail and mixed-use destinations. Locally, the news also stirs curiosity over whether Target will preserve or incorporate the historic Sears sign into its new designâa piece of neighborhood history many residents would love to see honored.
While the Sears building is long gone, the sign remains as a highly visible reminder of the areaâs mid-century boom. For many longtime Houstonians, itâs not just a construction site, but a place packed with memories thatâs now turning the page to its next chapter.
Editorâs Note: For readers who may be younger or newer to Baytownâour city had its own Sears store many years ago on Texas Avenue [later Sears had a large anchor store at the San Jacinto Mall which was demolished.] That building was later purchased by Lee College and is still owned and in use by the college today.
