Covestro Expands with New U.S.
and Thailand Sites
Covestro, which operates a large facility in Baytown and employs many local residents, announced today it has reached an agreement to acquire two specialty chemical production sites previously owned by Vencorex. The facilities are located in Freeport, Texas, and Rayong, Thailand.
The move expands Covestro’s production of isocyanate derivatives, key ingredients used in coatings, adhesives, and sealants found in everything from vehicles and ships to bridges, electronics, and furniture. Company leaders say the acquisitions strengthen Covestro’s long-term growth strategy and will allow them to serve customer demand more effectively in both the U.S. and Asia-Pacific markets.
The purchase is expected to be finalized by the end of 2025.

La Porte’s Special Programs:
A Second Home for
Adults with Disabilities
For more than 15 years, La Porte’s Special Programs for Adults with Disabilities has been changing lives through sports, fitness, and daily activities that build both skills and confidence. At the heart of it is Jeff Brown, the city’s Recreation Therapist, who has grown the program into a true second home for many participants.
What started in 2010 with just five Special Olympics sports has now expanded to eight, including volleyball, basketball, powerlifting, and tennis. The program also features Unified Sports, where participants compete alongside staff, volunteers, and family members.
Beyond athletics, the year-round Adult Day Program provides structure and routine for adults ages 18–64. Participants are picked up from their homes each morning and spend the day learning practical skills such as cooking, exercise, crafts, and even CPR training — all while enjoying meaningful social interaction.
Brown says the transformation in participants is remarkable. Many who were once shy and reserved now hold part-time jobs, earn driver’s licenses, and thrive in new friendships. For families, the program offers peace of mind, knowing their loved ones are supported in a safe, encouraging environment.
“This is their second home,” Brown said. “They have their own cubbies, a routine they count on, and friendships they look forward to every day.”
Community members are invited to get involved by volunteering, attending events, or just stopping by the center at 1302 South Broadway. All volunteers must complete a city background check.
“It’s more than a job. It’s a family,” Brown shared. “And we’re always happy to welcome new faces into it.”
