Officials Investigating Unidentified Odor Reported Near Deer Park Industrial Site
As of Tuesday afternoon, officials are continuing to investigate a mysterious odor reported early this morning in the Deer Park industrial corridor, near Tidal Road and Highway 225. While no hazardous air quality readings have been detected, the source of the odor remains unidentified.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, calls began coming in around 7:30 a.m. reporting a strong odor and symptoms including headaches and nausea. Multiple agencies responded, including the Harris County Hazmat team, Deer Park Office of Emergency Management (OEM), and environmental contractors.
Two employees from Shell were taken to the hospital for precautionary evaluation, though their symptoms were described as mild. A shelter-in-place was briefly issued internally at Linde Deer Park, citing an offsite incident. That facility followed protocol based on guidance from neighboring plants.
Tidal Road northbound and the westbound frontage road of Highway 225 were closed for part of the morning but have since reopened. Air monitoring conducted by Shell, the City of Deer Park, and independent contractors CTEH and TCH Environmental has not detected any hazardous substances within city limits.
According to Deer Park OEM, wind speeds of 2–4 mph moving southwest supported early assessments that the community was not at risk. While Lubrizol was mentioned in the initial response, the company has stated that there is no indication the odor originated from their facility, and they continue to monitor air quality at their fence line.
The incident, which is being classified as a “suspicious odor” investigation, involved coordination among several agencies, including the Precinct 8 Constable’s Office, Deer Park Fire Marshal’s Office, and representatives from Commissioner Adrian Garcia’s office.
Officials noted that in a heavily industrial area like Deer Park, such odor incidents are not unusual, but each report is taken seriously and investigated thoroughly. As of the most recent update around 2:30 p.m., the investigation is ongoing and no facility has claimed responsibility.
Residents are encouraged to follow updates from Deer Park OEM and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office for any new developments.

🧠 Trivia is back… the old-school way (for now)!
We know—we said a new and improved trivia was coming. Then we ran into some “technical difficulties” (aka: the software got stage fright). 😅
While we sort that out, we’re bringing back the classic version you know and love. Thanks for sticking with us!
Which of the following is true about how skunks spray? |

Tuesday’s Answer
C) They are animals that filter water to feed
Tuesday’s Quiz: Which of the following is true about sea sponges?
Answer: C) They are animals that filter water to feed
Sea sponges are simple animals (not plants) that lack a brain, nervous system, and internal organs. They feed by filtering tiny particles from water that flows through their porous bodies. They are sessile, meaning they stay fixed in one place.
