When the Garbage Truck Knows
You Better Than Your Neighbor

(Baytown isn’t under robot surveillance… yet.)

The city of Dayton, Ohio, is turning to artificial intelligence in an innovative push to improve its residents’ recycling habits. New AI-powered garbage trucks, equipped with smart cameras, are now scanning trash and recycling bins curbside to identify when people are tossing items into the wrong containers.

This pilot program, rolled out in partnership with the Cincinnati-based company Compology, uses technology embedded in garbage trucks to automatically analyze the contents of recycling bins as they’re emptied. If contamination—such as food waste, plastic bags, or non-recyclable items—is detected, the system records the bin's location and notifies city officials. Residents then receive targeted feedback by mail, encouraging proper recycling practices in the future.

The initiative aims to reduce the city’s recycling contamination rate, which currently sits at 26%—significantly above the 10% threshold required to avoid penalties from Dayton’s recycling processor, Rumpke Waste & Recycling. If contamination levels remain high, the city risks financial consequences, as loads with too many non-recyclables can be rejected or charged extra fees.

For now, the program is educational rather than punitive. No fines are being issued, and the primary goal is to raise awareness and encourage behavior change. Officials hope the AI technology will help make recycling more efficient, reduce landfill waste, and save the city money in the long run.

The system is being tested on 25 of Dayton’s recycling trucks and includes a dashboard that allows city staff to view contamination levels across neighborhoods. Residents flagged for repeated contamination may eventually receive more direct outreach or even in-person visits from city representatives.

Dayton is among a growing number of U.S. cities experimenting with smart waste solutions. By blending traditional sanitation services with modern technology, the city is betting that a little AI oversight can make a big difference in how communities handle their waste.
