ExxonMobil Doubles Baytown Recycling Capacity with Second Advanced Unit
ExxonMobil has significantly expanded its advanced plastic recycling operations in Baytown with the launch of a second processing unit. This addition effectively doubles the site's recycling capacity, building on the foundation laid by the initial unit, which has been operational since late 2022. Together, the two units have processed over 100 million pounds of plastic waste as of May 2025.
This expansion is part of ExxonMobil’s broader strategy to scale up its advanced recycling footprint. The company has announced further plans to bring two additional units online in Baytown and a new facility in Beaumont by 2026. These developments are expected to elevate the company’s global advanced recycling capacity to 1 billion pounds (approximately 450,000 metric tons) annually by 2027.
Advanced recycling technologies employed at ExxonMobil’s facilities convert a wide range of used plastics into raw materials that can be reused to manufacture new products. According to the company, this process enables the recovery of nearly 90% of the plastic processed, helping to reduce landfill waste and support more sustainable manufacturing practices.
By integrating these recycling units into existing industrial complexes, ExxonMobil reports it can increase capacity quickly and cost-effectively. The company also highlights ongoing partnerships aimed at improving plastic collection and sorting infrastructure, such as the joint venture Cyclyx International LLC and the Houston Recycling Collaboration. These efforts are designed to support local recycling rates and involve collaboration with municipalities and other stakeholders.
Looking ahead, ExxonMobil is evaluating similar advanced recycling investments in other regions, including North America, Europe, and Asia, with the goal of further supporting circular economy initiatives around the world.
