NTSB Releases Preliminary Report on Crash That Killed Grandfather and Grandson
There are new details from federal investigators about the tragic plane crash near Hankamer, Texas, that took the lives of a 61-year-old La Porte man and his 15-year-old grandson from Austin.
The crash, which happened on May 24, claimed the lives of Larry Motte, an experienced pilot, and his grandson, after they took off from Baytown Airport for a personal flight.
This week, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its preliminary report, offering the first official look into what happened during the final minutes of their flight.
🕯 What the NTSB Found:
The plane, a Rockwell Commander 114A, took off around 4:27 p.m.
It climbed to just over 4,200 feet, but its speed dropped just before entering a sudden, steep dive.
At 4:57 p.m., the aircraft began descending at over 14,000 feet per minute — an extremely rapid and uncontrolled drop.
Security video from a nearby business captured the plane in a nose-down position, with no visible signs of fire or structural failure.
The crash occurred in a wooded area and left a wide debris field, with parts of the plane found buried deep in the ground.
Motte was a licensed private pilot with more than 1,200 hours of flight experience, and weather is not believed to have played a role. The NTSB report did not point to any immediate mechanical failure, but the full investigation is ongoing and could take several months.
Baytown’s Baseball Love Story:
⚾A Home Plate Wedding💍
A charming blast from the past with a Baytown twist—KHOU’s “Strange but true: Houstonians take part in first home plate wedding” revisits a quirky 1927 love story that eventually landed in Baytown. After tying the knot on a baseball diamond in Illinois, Heinie Schuble and Agnes Shaw made Baytown their home.
If you're in the mood for a heartwarming tale that’s equal parts romance and baseball lore, this one's a delightful detour from the usual headlines.♥⚾
