Federal Clean Energy Grants
Canceled in Baytown and Beyond
The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced the cancellation of 24 clean energy projects totaling approximately $3.7 billion in federal support. The decision, according to the agency, followed a review which found the projects were not economically viable, would not deliver a positive return on taxpayer investment, and did not meet the country’s current energy needs.
Among the rescinded awards was a $331 million grant to ExxonMobil for a hydrogen project at its Baytown refinery. The project aimed to reduce carbon emissions by replacing natural gas with hydrogen in ethylene production. Another Baytown-related cancellation included $270 million allocated to a Calpine Corp. subsidiary for a carbon capture demonstration facility.
Other major cancellations included $500 million for a low-carbon cement project by Heidelberg Materials AG, $375 million for Eastman Chemical Co.’s molecular recycling project in Longview, Texas, and $170 million for Kraft Heinz Co. for clean energy initiatives.
The announcement came two weeks after the DOE implemented a policy requiring swift compliance from grant recipients or risk having their awards revoked. It also follows internal agency discussions about possibly eliminating the $27 billion clean energy office, which oversees funding for projects like hydrogen hubs, carbon capture, and battery storage.
The affected companies did not immediately comment on the cancellations.

🚨 K9 Sigma Helps Deputies Uncover
Major Meth Haul During I-10 Stop 🚨
A routine patrol by Chambers County deputies led to a major drug seizure late on the night of Wed., May 28. Around 11:00 p.m., members of the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigative Unit were conducting proactive patrols along the I-10 business corridor when they spotted a 2001 Chevrolet van exiting a group of abandoned houses near the westbound I-10 service road and Grand Parkway.
Deputies initiated a traffic stop after observing a violation in the 10000 block of the I-10 service road. The driver was identified as Ryan Zurovec of Crosby, Texas. During the stop, deputies suspected criminal activity beyond the traffic offense. When Zurovec denied consent to search the vehicle, K9 Sigma was called in to assist.
Following a positive alert by the canine, a search of the van uncovered approximately 920 grams—roughly two pounds—of methamphetamine concealed inside.
Zurovec was taken into custody and charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance PG1 greater than 400 grams, a first-degree felony. He was booked into the Chambers County Jail.
As always, all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
