Baytown's Shoe Program Helps
Kids Start School on the Right Foot
As the back-to-school season nears, the City of Baytown is offering a meaningful opportunity to help some local students start the year on the right foot through its "New Year in New Shoes" program. The city's "New Year in New Shoes" program is back for 2025, aiming to give a boost of confidence to students from low to moderate-income families by helping them step into the new school year with a brand-new pair of shoes.
For many young people, the first day of school is filled with excitement—and pressure. New clothes, new supplies, and especially new shoes are part of that fresh start. But for children from struggling households, the absence of something as simple as new footwear can set them apart from their peers in painful ways. That’s why this program is more than just a financial benefit; it’s an emotional lift, helping children feel included, proud, and ready to learn.
From June 16 through June 29, 2025, families can apply online only to receive assistance through the program. Because funding is limited, applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis. Each applicant must meet certain eligibility criteria to qualify, including being a Baytown resident, proving their relationship to the child, verifying legal residency for all household members, and providing documentation of public assistance.
The City of Baytown is committed to making sure that every student walks into their classroom with dignity and excitement. A fresh pair of shoes may seem small to some—but to a child eager to fit in, it can mean everything.
To apply for this program, visit the Citizen Self Service page, and search for "New Year in New Shoes" program.
Required documentation will be needed when submitting an online application. To see all the program requirements please refer to the General Information form and Application Instructions.

🚨 La Porte Police Dept. SCAM ALERT 🚨
The La Porte Police Dept. has received multiple reports of a phone scam where individuals are receiving calls from someone claiming to be with the La Porte Police Department.
The caller ID may even display the department’s name or number, but these calls are NOT from La Porte PD. The scammer tells the victim they have an active warrant and must pay money immediately to avoid arrest.
They may ask you to:
🔴 Buy gift cards
🔴 Make payments over the phone
🔴 Share personal or financial information.
The La Porte Police Department will never:
✔️ Call you to request or collect money
✔️ Ask you to purchase gift cards or make payments by phone
✔️ Handle any court-related issues over the phone
All official court proceedings and warrant notifications are handled by mail or in person, not over a phone call.
👉 If you receive one of these calls, hang up immediately. Do not give out any personal information, and report the call to us.
📢 Help La Porte PD stop this scam by sharing this information with others to spread awareness.
Similar scams have been reported in other communities as well, so it’s important for everyone—no matter where they live—to stay alert and cautious when receiving unexpected calls claiming to be from law enforcement.

A Sanctuary of Support:
Pregnancy Resource Center East
Tucked in the heart of our community, Pregnancy Resource Center East (PRCE) has spent more than three decades quietly transforming lives—one young woman, one family, one child at a time. Founded on compassion and care, PRCE offers a haven for young women who are newly pregnant or think they may be, meeting them not with judgment, but with understanding.
The center provides free pregnancy testing and ultrasound services, giving women the knowledge they need to make informed decisions. But PRCE’s mission doesn’t end there. Through a robust curriculum of parenting, prenatal, and newborn/infant classes, clients receive guidance every step of the way—from the first positive test through their baby’s first birthday.
PRCE also nurtures the practical side of parenting with its Baby Boutique, a welcoming space stocked with essentials to help new parents provide for their growing families. And recognizing that strong families include strong fathers, PRCE offers “The Intentional Man,” a class tailored for men involved in the pregnancy, promoting responsible and engaged fatherhood.
Everything PRCE offers is completely free to clients, a testament to the community’s generosity and the tireless dedication of its volunteers. As Gail Duhon, Executive Director remembers, “I was drawn to PRCE back in the early '90s, impressed by their non-judgmental approach and their commitment to helping women make well-informed decisions.”
Community involvement remains central to PRCE’s identity. In recent months, they’ve participated in local events like the Baytown Sun's Women's Expo, the Mont Belvieu Methodist Fair, and the Lee College Health Fair. Their calendar is also filled with meaningful fundraisers that sustain their mission—like the annual golf tournament, "Tee Up Fore Life," set for Saturday, September 13 at Stonebridge at Newport, and the Annual Fundraising Banquet & Silent Auction on October 18 at the Hyatt Regency in Baytown.
In their larger, expanded location, PRCE continues to grow its programs and outreach. Through it all, their core mission remains unchanged: to lend a listening ear, offer unwavering support, and walk alongside women and families as they navigate one of life’s most challenging—and beautiful—journeys.
Pregnancy Resource Center East is now located at 610 S. Main St., Highlands, TX 77562

One Cent for a Burger?
Wendy’s App Deal Returns
for a Limited Time
Baytown burger lovers, take note—Wendy’s is bringing back one of its most popular promotions, and it’s a tasty deal for your wallet. Starting May 28 and running through June 1, the fast-food chain is offering its classic Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger for just one cent. The catch? You’ll need to purchase at least one other menu item to unlock the deal.
The offer is available exclusively through the Wendy’s app, and it’s a return of a promotion that saw big buzz when it launched last year. With its signature crispy bacon, fresh beef patty, cheese, lettuce, and tomato stacked on a toasted bun, the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger has long been a fan favorite—and now it’s practically free.
So, whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or swinging through the drive-thru after a day out with the family, it’s a good time to check the Wendy’s app before you order. Baytown residents can enjoy this limited-time deal at participating locations, but be sure to act fast—it ends June 1.
