Man Seriously Injured in Baytown
Shooting; Domestic Violence Suspected

A man was seriously injured in a shooting Saturday night in a residential neighborhood in Baytown, prompting an ongoing investigation by the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were dispatched to the 8200 block of Broadleaf Avenue around 9:30 p.m. after a woman called 911, reporting that her husband had been shot. Emergency crews arrived on the scene and transported the man via LifeFlight to a local hospital, where he was listed in serious but stable condition in the intensive care unit.

Authorities believe the incident stems from a domestic violence situation. Several other individuals were present at the time of the shooting and are currently being interviewed by investigators.

While a woman was detained at the scene, no arrests have been made, and no charges have been filed as of Sunday. The identities of those involved have not been released. Family violence investigators have been brought in to assist with the case.

The investigation remains active as officials continue to gather information.

Baytown Celebrated Economic
Development Week:
Moving Baytown Forward

The City of Baytown celebrated Economic Development Week last week, highlighting the investments, planning, and partnerships that continue to drive Baytown forward. Economic development in Baytown means more than growth—it means opportunity, quality of life, and long-term prosperity.

Baytown is a prime Texas community poised for growth. With strategic investments underway, the City is transforming Downtown along Texas Avenue into a lively district for arts, culture, and business. At the intersection of Garth Road and I-10, the San Jacinto Marketplace development is also underway, bringing new commercial life to one of Baytown’s busiest corridors.

A major project shaping Baytown’s future is the new ExxonMobil Baytown Events Center, funded by a $75 million contribution from ExxonMobil. Designed primarily as a community sports venue, the center signals a new era of recreation and community engagement in Baytown.

Baytown is also a global industry powerhouse, home to TGS Cedar Port Industrial Park, the largest rail-and-barge-served industrial park in the U.S., and major employers like ExxonMobil, Covestro, and Chevron Phillips that anchor our legacy of advanced manufacturing.

Our robust economic development initiatives would not be possible without the tireless efforts of City of Baytown staff—from planners and engineers to economic development professionals and public works teams—who work behind the scenes every day to support thoughtful growth and attract quality investment. Their dedication ensures Baytown pushes forward into the future to remain a strong, connected, and opportunity-rich community for businesses and residents alike.

Let’s Clear the Air: Library Here to Stay

There has been some confusion that the beginning of a new multipurpose facility for the City of Baytown means the end of the Sterling Municipal Library and all that it provides to the community.

Despite conflicting information from recent published articles and speculation from others, the City of Baytown is not getting rid of the library from our community. In fact, we are committed to preserving and enhancing the essential services the library provides. What we are doing is exploring the best long-term plan for the library’s physical space, whether that means upgrading the existing facility or considering a new building with modern amenities that would be on the ExxonMobil Baytown Events Center property.

Let’s face it. The facility, at more than 50,500 square feet, is showing its age. The Goose Creek Library, a branch of the Harris County Library, served residents until 1963 when it became the Sterling Municipal Library, a city funded public library. It had some renovations in 1977 and was last expanded in 1995. A 2020 facility assessment found that several critical systems, like the roof, ceilings, storm drainage, and HVAC systems were in poor condition. Some repairs have been made since then, such as HVAC upgrades and roof patching, but major investments are still needed to keep the facility safe and functional.

A full roof replacement alone is expected to cost more than $1 million. That’s why we are carefully and responsibly evaluating all options to ensure the library remains a strong, vibrant resource for generations to come.

One thing is clear: our commitment to the library remains the same. Its look may change and it might eventually be in upgraded facilities, but its mission, services, and community value are not going anywhere.
