Summer Water-Saving Tips for
Area Homes and Yards
Summer in the Greater Baytown area often means more time outside, higher temperatures and a noticeable jump in water use. Whether it’s watering the lawn, topping off a pool or just trying to keep up with everyday household needs, those extra gallons can add up quickly. City of Baytown officials are encouraging residents to take a few simple steps this summer to conserve water, reduce waste and help keep utility costs in check.
One of the biggest places to start is by checking for leaks. A dripping faucet, a running toilet or a hidden open line can waste far more water than many people realize. Residents can test toilets for silent leaks with a few drops of food coloring in the tank, inspect faucets and pipes for drips, and even use their water meter to check for hidden leaks by turning everything off and seeing if the meter continues to move.
Other easy ways to save water include taking shorter showers, turning off the faucet while brushing teeth, washing only full loads of dishes or laundry, and installing low-flow shower heads or toilets when possible.
Outdoors, residents can help by watering lawns only when needed, mowing a little higher to help grass hold moisture, and choosing drought-tolerant plants for landscaping.
Small changes may not seem like much on their own, but over time they can save thousands of gallons and make a real difference during the summer months.
