Quick Action by Baytown Officers
Helps Save Trapped Driver
After Major Crash

A Baytown police officer helped rescue an unconscious driver following a major two-vehicle crash Tuesday night on W. Baker Road.

According to the Baytown Police Department, officers were dispatched around 9:30 p.m. to the 3100 block of W. Baker after reports of a serious crash. While officers were en route, dispatch advised that one vehicle was on fire and a female driver in the second vehicle was trapped inside.

When officers arrived, they found a burning pickup truck with flames spreading to a nearby fence, tree, and power lines. Just feet away, officers located a heavily damaged vehicle with an unconscious woman trapped inside.

Despite the danger posed by the nearby fire, one officer broke a window and climbed into the vehicle to reach the driver. With assistance from other responding officers, the woman was safely removed and carried to a secure location where EMS personnel began treatment.

Police said all occupants involved in the crash were transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The department praised the coordinated efforts of police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel, noting that the incident serves as a reminder of the dangerous situations first responders face while protecting the community.

Supply Issues Affect Material Produced
at Covestro’s Baytown Plant

Covestro’s Baytown facility is part of a larger chemical industry supply issue affecting manufacturers across North America.

Industry reports say Covestro has declared a force majeure on certain MDI products, a material used to make items such as insulation, furniture cushions, refrigerators, coatings, adhesives, and sealants. A force majeure is a formal notice that unexpected circumstances are affecting a company’s ability to supply products as normal.

While MDI is not a household term, it is an important ingredient used in many everyday products. Covestro’s Baytown site is one of the company’s major production facilities, making the issue locally significant.

The reports indicate the disruption is related to production and raw material supply challenges affecting parts of the Gulf Coast chemical industry. There is no indication of a public safety concern for Baytown residents. Instead, the issue is primarily a manufacturing and supply-chain challenge that could affect companies that rely on MDI for their products.

This situation is also a reminder of Baytown’s important role in supplying materials used by manufacturers across the country and around the world.
