Baytown on the Map Again
with New Plastics-to-Fuel Project
A new industrial project planned for Baytown could turn plastic waste into fuel—bringing more growth, jobs, and attention to the area.
Abundia Global Impact Group is working on a facility that would take hard-to-recycle plastics and convert them into useful products like renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel. The project is still in development, with a final investment decision expected in 2026.
The process works in stages. First, plastic waste is turned into a liquid. Then, advanced technology is used to refine that liquid into clean fuels that can be used in today’s engines and systems.
Leaders say the goal is to reduce plastic waste while also creating new energy sources. The project is also designed to work with existing infrastructure, making it easier to produce and deliver fuel.
If approved, the facility would add to Baytown’s growing role in energy and manufacturing—helping bring new business opportunities and supporting local jobs while tackling a major environmental challenge.

Did You Know?
Nearly Half of U.S. Oil Reserves
Are Stored in Texas
With recent news about the release of part of the nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve, here’s an interesting fact many people may not realize—a large portion of that reserve is located right here in Texas.
The U.S. maintains emergency oil supplies in four main locations along the Gulf Coast, with two of those sites in Texas, including one near Freeport. In total, the reserve currently holds hundreds of millions of barrels of oil, stored deep underground in naturally occurring salt caverns.
These caverns are ideal for storage because salt formations help contain oil safely and efficiently. The Gulf Coast was chosen not only for its geology, but also because it sits close to major refineries and oil production areas, making it easier to distribute fuel when needed.
The reserve was originally created in the 1970s to provide a backup supply during disruptions. Today, it remains a key part of the nation’s energy system.
It’s a reminder that Texas continues to play a major role in the country’s energy infrastructure—often in ways many people don’t see.

La Porte Invites Residents to
Join Community Garden Program
La Porte residents can now sign up for the 2026 Community Gardens program, offering a fun and sustainable way to grow fresh produce and flowers while connecting with neighbors.
Garden plots are available at two locations: the Recreation & Fitness Center (1322 S. Broadway) and St. John’s Episcopal Church (815 S. Broadway).
Each 4’ x 8’ raised bed is available for $40 per season, with a limit of two plots per gardener.
The season runs from March 1 through October 30, and on-site water and hoses are provided. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or just getting started, this is a great opportunity to get involved.
Spots are limited, so residents are encouraged to reserve their plots soon.
For more information about the La Porte Community Gardens, registration details, and program guidelines, contact Marissa Alaniz at [email protected] or call
