Groundbreaking Held for
New Lee College Campus
in Mont Belvieu

After more than a decade of planning, partnerships, and persistence, the Lee College Barbers Hill Higher Education Center is officially underway.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held yesterday, Feb. 25th as construction continues on the new campus at FM 1409 and Gill Parkway in Mont Belvieu—a major step forward for one of the fastest-growing areas in our coverage region. The two-story, 60,000-square-foot facility will sit on 20 acres and is expected to open in fall 2027, serving around 1,000 students.

Local leaders, educators, and community partners gathered to celebrate what many called a transformational moment. This marks Lee College’s first permanent expansion into its service area in its 92-year history.

The new campus will bring college-level education closer to home, offering dual-credit opportunities for Barbers Hill ISD students, reduced tuition for local residents, and expanded programs for adult learners. Plans also include workforce training and certification programs aligned with regional needs—helping prepare students for high-demand careers right here in the area.

Backed by strong voter support in 2024, this project reflects a shared investment in the future—creating new pathways for students and strengthening the community for years to come.

Tesla Plans Major Truck Charging
Expansion—La Porte on the Map

Tesla is expanding its footprint in a big way—announcing plans to build 60 Tesla Semi Megacharger sites across the U.S., including one in La Porte.

These Megachargers are designed specifically for Tesla’s all-electric Semi trucks and deliver up to 1.2 megawatts of power, allowing heavy-duty trucks to gain up to 400 miles of range in about 30 minutes. It’s part of a larger push to electrify freight along major corridors like Interstate 10, which runs directly through our region.

Texas is leading the rollout with 19 planned locations, more than any other state. The La Porte site is expected to be part of a growing network aimed at supporting long-haul electric trucking and reducing downtime for freight operators.

Tesla is also partnering with Pilot Travel Centers to integrate these high-powered chargers into existing fueling locations, helping solve one of the biggest challenges in electric trucking—reliable infrastructure.

For the Baytown and La Porte area, this signals continued growth in industrial innovation and transportation. With more freight moving through our region every day, projects like this could play a key role in shaping the future of logistics right here at home.

A Night of Understanding,
Comfort, and Connection💙:
La Porte Police Create a
Safe Space for Sensory-Friendly Exploration

For many families, the sights and sounds of emergency situations—blaring sirens, flashing lights, large vehicles, and unfamiliar uniforms—can feel overwhelming. In those moments, what’s meant to help can sometimes create added stress.

That’s exactly why the La Porte Police Department is hosting a sensory-friendly Touch-A-Truck event in honor of Autism Awareness Month—creating a space where those experiences can be explored in a calm, welcoming way.

The event will take place Thursday, April 23, 2026, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the La Porte Police Department (3001 N. 23rd Street). Families will have the opportunity to see, touch, and explore a variety of city vehicles—including police units, fire trucks, EMS vehicles, public works equipment, and specialized response vehicles—without the noise and urgency of a real emergency.

The event is open to the public, with families of individuals with autism and other developmental or sensory challenges especially encouraged to attend. The evening is designed to offer hands-on learning, meaningful conversations, and a supportive, inclusive environment where everyone feels welcome.

More importantly, it’s a chance to build comfort and familiarity. By experiencing these environments ahead of time, individuals with sensory sensitivities can feel more at ease if a real emergency ever occurs. At the same time, first responders gain valuable insight into the unique needs of the families they serve.

City departments will also be on hand to answer questions, share resources, and spend meaningful time connecting with the community.

At its heart, this evening is about more than trucks—it’s about trust. It’s about helping every neighbor feel safe, understood, and supported, while building relationships that truly matter.
