Chambers Co. Deputies
Ask for Tips After
Family Dog Killed

A Baytown family is grieving after their dog was found shot and killed in their backyard, prompting an animal cruelty investigation by the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called Monday evening to Cotton Lane Road in the Plantation neighborhood, where they discovered a 6-year-old yellow Labrador named Ace lying dead with an apparent gunshot wound. Investigators believe the shooting occurred around 5 p.m., and a nearby resident reported hearing a gunshot at about that time.

Authorities say Ace was a family pet that stayed within the yard, and they are asking for the public’s help in identifying who is responsible. Neighbors are encouraged to review security camera or doorbell footage from approximately 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., particularly anything showing unusual activity along Cotton Lane Road.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at (409) 267-2500.

Tips may also be submitted anonymously through the Sheriff’s Office app or through Chambers County Crime Stoppers at (844) 860-8477, where a cash reward may be available.

Deputies say even small details could help bring answers to the family.

BH School Board OKs $95m
Fieldhouse Bond Election

The Barbers Hill ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Monday night to call a $95 million bond election in May to renovate athletic facilities in response to continued enrollment growth and the district’s transition to Class 6A, the state’s largest school classification. Passage of the bond would not result in an increase to the Barbers Hill ISD tax rate.

The proposed bond would fund the construction, acquisition, and equipping of a multipurpose athletic fieldhouse, along with additional stadium improvements, including expanded fieldhouse capacity and new locker room facilities.

The district’s current fieldhouse was constructed in 1980 and fully paid off by 1998. The proposed new fieldhouse would serve as a multipurpose facility, including the ability to host convocations and graduation ceremonies in the event of inclement weather.

Barbers Hill ISD’s total student enrollment has grown from fewer than 1,500 students in 1980 to more than 8,100 today. Enrollment projections indicate the district will continue to grow at an annual rate of 3 to 4 percent over the next decade.

“One of our key district goals this year was to compare our athletic facilities to those of other Class 6A districts, and this initiative is a result of that work,” said Barbers Hill ISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Poole.

Since 1998, Barbers Hill ISD has held eight bond elections, all of which have passed by wide margins. The most recent bond, totaling $378 million and approved by voters in 2024, funded the construction of two new campuses and districtwide improvements and received support from 82 percent of voters.

Election Day for the $95 million fieldhouse bond is May 2, with early voting beginning April 20.

Storytelling Performance
“Makin’ Cake” Takes the Stage
at Lee College PAC

“Makin’ Cake”, a storytelling performance by Dasha Kelly Hamilton, will take the stage at the Lee College Performing Arts Center on Saturday, February 21, at 7:30 p.m.

Blending personal storytelling, digital media, and live performance, Makin’ Cake uses the metaphor of a layered cake to explore race, class, and economic inequality in America. Part history lesson and part social reflection, the show examines how opportunity and wealth are distributed, while inviting audiences into a broader conversation about equity and human connection.

Originally commissioned by the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, Makin’ Cake continues to spark dialogue in communities through thoughtful, engaging storytelling.
