ExxonMobil and BASF to Build Hydrogen Demonstration Plant in Baytown
ExxonMobil and BASF have announced a new collaboration aimed at advancing methane pyrolysis, a technology that produces low-emission hydrogen and solid carbon. According to a press release from ExxonMobil, the companies have signed a joint development agreement to move this technology toward commercial use, including plans to build a demonstration plant at the ExxonMobil Baytown Complex.
Leaders from both companies say the partnership brings together their strengths in research, innovation, and large-scale industrial planning. Mike Zamora, president of ExxonMobil Technology and Engineering Company, said the collaboration will help accelerate the development of low-emission hydrogen. He noted that methane pyrolysis could be especially useful in areas where traditional carbon capture and storage is harder to implement.
BASF has been working on methane pyrolysis for more than a decade through a project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space. Dr. Stephan Kothrade, a member of BASFâs Board of Executive Directors and its Chief Technology Officer, said the process could help reduce the carbon footprint of BASFâs product portfolio and support customers working toward greener operations.
Methane pyrolysis uses electricity to convert natural gas or similar gases into hydrogen and solid carbon. According to the press release, this process does not create COâ emissions from the reaction itself and requires far less electrical energy than water electrolysis. It also does not use water and can be deployed in different locations by using existing natural gas infrastructure. The hydrogen and carbon produced can be used in industries such as chemicals, steel, construction, aluminum manufacturing, and advanced carbon products like battery materials.
For the Baytown area, the key development is the planned demonstration plant. The facility is expected to produce up to 2,000 tons of low-carbon hydrogen and 6,000 tons of solid carbon each year. According to ExxonMobil, this plant will be an important step toward proving the technology at a commercial scale.
ExxonMobil says methane pyrolysis fits into its broader strategy to develop hydrogen solutions that can work across many regions and existing energy systems. The company describes the partnership with BASF as a milestone in its efforts to deliver scalable and efficient hydrogen technologies.

TALKE USA Expands With
Baytown Warehouse
TALKE USA has opened a new 150,000-square-foot warehouse in Baytownâs Cedar Port Industrial Park, its first multi-user facility in Texas. The company says the site will support its chemical logistics operations and will add local job opportunities as hiring increases.
Baytown was chosen for its location near petrochemical customers and its rail access to Port Houston, which TALKE says is important for both import and domestic shipments.

EPA Administrator Visits
ExxonMobilâs Baytown
Recycling Operation
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin recently visited ExxonMobilâs Baytown facility to learn more about the companyâs advanced recycling work. According to a press release from ExxonMobil, the visit focused on how the process turns hard-to-recycle plastic waste into raw materials that can be used to make new products.
ExxonMobil Senior Vice President Jack Williams hosted the tour. During the visit, Zeldin said the investment behind the recycling operations is impressive and noted that the EPA believes it is possible to protect the environment while still supporting economic growth.

Local Jugging Report Highlights
Why This Time of Year Is a
Hot Spot for Thieves
Baytown Police responded to a jugging incident on Thursday afternoon after a report was taken in the 1200 block of West Baker Road. According to the police report, the case involved theft from a motor vehicle with $15,500 in cash reported stolen. No additional details were released.
As the holiday season approaches, jugging becomes more common. Criminals look for people leaving banks, ATMs, check-cashing stores, or any place where someone might be handling cash or important documents. They often follow victims to another locationâstores, gas stations, or even their homesâwaiting for the moment a bag or envelope is left inside a vehicle. Itâs a crime of opportunity, and this time of year provides plenty of them.
Shoppers tend to run more errands, visit multiple stores in one trip, and carry holiday cash or gift purchases in their vehicles. That makes parking lots a preferred target for jugging suspects. Even a quick stop can be enough time for someone watching to break a window and grab what theyâre after.
Police departments across the region remind residents that the simplest habits can make a big difference: avoid leaving anything visible inside your vehicle and stay alert after bank visits.
