NEWS RELEASE BPD:
Investigation Underway Following
Major Crash Involving
Baytown Police Officer
Baytown Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating a major crash involving an on-duty Baytown Police officer. On Thur. Oct. 23rd, at approximately 7:10 p.m., Baytown Police officers responded to a crash involving a marked patrol unit and a van at the intersection of West Baker Road and Country Club Drive.
Preliminary information indicates an on-duty Baytown Police officer was involved in the crash while operating a marked patrol unit. The officer sustained a leg injury and was transported by Life Flight for medical treatment. The officer is currently in stable condition.
The second vehicle, a 2023 Honda Odyssey driven by a Baytown woman, was occupied by five minors. Two of the minors were transported by Life Flight, while the driver and the remaining passengers received medical attention at the scene. The extent of their injuries is unknown at this time.
Responding officers immediately rendered life-saving measures until Baytown EMS arrived and assumed care of the injured parties.
The Baytown Police Department’s Crash Reconstruction Team, along with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office Vehicular Crimes Division (VCD), responded to the scene and initiated an investigation into the cause of the crash.
“This is a tragedy for everyone involved and impacted by this event,” said Police Chief John Stringer. “Our hearts, thoughts, and prayers are with the children and family involved, as well as our officer, the officer’s family, and the Baytown officers who responded to the scene. While this has been a difficult time for everyone, we are grateful that our officer is in stable condition. The department’s Traffic Reconstruction Team is investigating in accordance with standard procedures and is cooperating fully to ensure a transparent and factual review of this incident. We ask for patience and objectivity from the community as we gather all information, which may take some time. I would also like to recognize the professional and compassionate response of our officers who provided aid to all involved.”
The investigation remains ongoing. Additional information will be provided as soon as it is available for release.

Mother Arrested Following
Liberty County Near-Drowning Incident
A Liberty County mother has been arrested in connection with a near-drowning incident last month that left her and her three children hospitalized.
Jessica Quintana was taken into custody Friday morning after being released from the hospital. She is charged with two counts of injury to a child causing bodily injury and one count of assault causing bodily injury.
The case stems from an early-morning incident on Sept. 29th at the family’s property in Liberty County. According to investigators, emergency crews were called after a report that a woman and her children were near a pond and possibly in danger.
Responding deputies found the three children wet and out of the water, while the mother was still in the pond and had to be rescued. Officials say the children were pulled to safety before help arrived.
Quintana remained hospitalized in critical condition for several weeks before being released on Oct. 24th, when she was immediately taken into custody and transferred to the Liberty County Jail.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, which occurred at a residence in Dayton described as part of a large private estate. Officials have indicated that they are still working to understand the events leading up to the situation and the mother’s intentions that morning.
The three children, who were not enrolled in school at the time, have since been placed in CPS custody and are currently living with their maternal grandparents.

Baytown Police Investigating
Death of 46-Year-Old Baytown Man
On Oct. 12th at approximately 8:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a family disturbance involving a firearm in the 9900 block of Bayou Woods Drive.
The male suspect had left before officers arrived but was later located in a nearby parking lot in the 7000 block of N. SH 146. When officers attempted to stop him, he refused to comply and struck a patrol vehicle.
Shortly afterward, he sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Officers immediately called EMS and began life-saving measures until EMS arrived on scene and took over.
The male was transported by Life Flight but later passed away. After reviewing available information and video footage, it was confirmed that no officer discharged their weapon. No one else was injured. “I fully support our officers and commend the professionalism, composure, and care they displayed throughout this very difficult situation,” said Chief John Stringer. Our thoughts are with the family during this tragic time.
This incident also serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health resources. Anyone struggling or in crisis can contact the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline for support, you are not alone. This remains an active investigation.

A Landmark Moment:
Baytown’s New Waterfront Sculpture Celebrates the City’s Spirit
Baytown’s newest landmark is impossible to miss and impossible not to photograph. The bold “BAYTOWN” sculpture, standing seven feet tall and overlooking the Fred Hartman Bridge and the bay, now welcomes visitors and locals alike to Bayland Island near the Hyatt Regency and Bayland Marina.
Designed by the City’s Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Department, the installation celebrates local creativity and a growing waterfront identity. It also serves as an open invitation for everyone to experience Baytown from a new perspective.
“As a former professional photographer, it’s been exciting to help create a photo attraction that serves visitors and our own community,” said Amy Shipley, Tourism Superintendent.
“We designed the sculpture with the lighting and angles photographers look for. It serves not just as a tourism stop, but as a backdrop where residents can capture milestones, family moments, and Baytown pride.”
The sculpture’s concept was inspired by the late David Adickes, the celebrated Houston artist known for his large-scale works such as the We Love Houston sign and the towering statue of Sam Houston in Huntsville. Adickes, who passed away in July, left a legacy of public art that shaped the creative landscape of Southeast Texas.
“When we started scouting possible locations, we used the ‘We Love Houston’ sculpture as inspiration until we could see what Baytown’s version might become,” Amy said. “His influence helped shape how we envisioned a landmark that celebrates our city’s identity.”
Adickes’ artistic spirit is already part of Baytown. His 15-foot-tall statue of General Sam Houston greets travelers at the roundabout between San Jacinto Boulevard and Hunt Road, a reminder of his photogenic, larger-than-life style. The new installation builds on that creative connection by combining local art with a sense of place.
Amy said, “I hope it’s a reminder of how art connects people across generations. Keeping those creative roots alive and seeing that story continue in Baytown is something really special.”
The BAYTOWN sculpture is more than a sign. It is an invitation. Visitors are encouraged to stop, explore, and take photos, while locals can use it as a backdrop for senior portraits, engagement pictures, and holiday photos.
The sculpture will continue to evolve with the seasons through special lighting displays and themed decorations that highlight community events. The goal is to keep the site fresh and inviting year-round as a place that reflects Baytown’s creativity and pride in every season.
Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, the new BAYTOWN sculpture offers a picture-perfect way to say, “You are here.”
