Lilly to Build $6.5B Factory
for First Obesity Pill

Pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly has announced plans to build a $6.5 billion manufacturing facility in Generation Park, located on Beltway 8 East about 22 miles from Baytown, almost directly across from the Summerwood subdivision. The project will create 615 full-time jobs, including positions for engineers, scientists, and lab technicians.

The factory will focus on producing Lilly’s small molecule medicines, including the oral GLP-1 drug orforglipron, which is currently under review as a potential treatment for obesity. The facility will also manufacture medicines for cardiometabolic, oncology, immunology, and neuroscience disorders.

Construction is expected to support around 4,000 jobs, adding to the project’s local economic footprint. With many residents in this region commuting 30 minutes or more for work, the Houston site could provide opportunities for workers from Baytown and surrounding communities.

The state has approved $5.5 million in funding for the project through the Texas Enterprise Fund under the Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation program. According to the Greater Houston Partnership, the Lilly project is one of the largest private life sciences investments in Texas history.

Lilly considered more than 300 sites before selecting Houston. The company cited workforce potential, access to transportation and utilities, and local incentives as deciding factors. The Houston facility is the second of four U.S. manufacturing sites Lilly plans to announce this year, following a $5 billion site in Virginia. Together, the four sites are expected to employ more than 3,000 full-time workers and support 10,000 construction jobs nationwide.

Locally, the project aligns with workforce development efforts already underway. San Jacinto College is opening its new Center for Biotechnology at Generation Park later this month, which will train students in bioprocessing and related fields. Lilly says it will partner with universities and invest in education initiatives across Texas to build a talent pipeline for its facilities.

Eli Lilly employs about 49,000 people worldwide, with nearly half based in the United States. The Houston facility will add to its existing U.S. operations in Indiana, North Carolina, New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Puerto Rico.

Lights, Camera, Action—
Digital Communications Academy
Students Lead Game Day
Production at Stallworth Stadium

Did you know?

Goose Creek CISD is proud to announce that students in the district’s Digital Communications Academy are officially taking over the production and live game day footage on the brand-new Stallworth Stadium scoreboard.

The state-of-the-art scoreboard, attached to the new Stallworth Field House completed as part of the 2019 Bond Program, was unveiled at a ribbon-cutting ceremony this summer. Now, Digital Communications Academy students are making it come alive with high-quality video, live coverage, performance introductions, and advertising from local businesses.

The students successfully completed their first trial run during the Goose Creek Memorial Patriots vs. Dayton Broncos scrimmage, putting their training into action and showcasing their ability to deliver professional-quality production for the community.

Led by academy teachers Kristen Jaso and Ric Morris, and under the leadership of Principal Shonna Prentice, students are gaining hands-on, brains-on learning by designing, filming, and producing real-time game day content. Their work includes instant replays, performance introductions, and advertising for local businesses—bringing professional-level production to Stallworth Stadium.

“This is an amazing opportunity that our Digital Communications students are truly excited about,” said Principal Shonna Prentice. “You can see the joy on their faces and hear the enthusiasm in their voices when they talk about it. Our students are developing confidence, creativity, and career-ready skills through this real-world experience.”

The academy offers a robust pathway of courses and includes a Dual Credit Program with Houston Community College, where students can earn a Certificate of Completion in Filmmaking – Film/Video Production Level 1.

“Students are not just learning about digital communications—they’re living it,” said Randal O’Brien, GCCISD Superintendent. “This is the type of real-world, skills-based learning that builds confidence, creativity, and career readiness. It’s a perfect example of how in GCCISD, We Grow Giants.”

Community members or business owners interested in advertising opportunities on the scoreboard can email [email protected] for more information.
