ExxonMobil Says New Graphite
Could Help EV Batteries Last Longer

According to several news reports and a statement from the company, ExxonMobil says it has developed a synthetic graphite that could help electric-vehicle (EV) batteries last up to 30% longer. The company also says the material may support faster charging and more driving range. Some carmakers are already testing it, according to reports.

How it works: (simple) Graphite lives on the anode side of a battery (the negative side). It helps store and release energy. Synthetic graphite is made in a factory instead of mined. The company says factory-made material can be more consistent, which may help batteries hold up better over time.

What Exxon is doing next: The company says it is building a U.S. supply chain for this material. It recently announced an agreement to acquire certain assets and technology from Superior Graphite. The plan, according to company statements and industry reports, is to scale up manufacturing and aim for commercial production around 2029. Exxon says it does not plan to build full batteries—its focus is supplying key materials for EVs and energy-storage systems.

Company background on batteries: The company points to its long history with battery research, including work in the 1970s that helped lead to today’s lithium-ion batteries. Leaders also say the company’s strength is in transforming molecules. As one executive put it at a recent energy talk, they don’t build wind or solar hardware, but they do see big opportunities in hydrogen and carbon-based materials that match their expertise.

Why it matters

For drivers: Longer battery life could mean fewer replacements, faster charging, and more range.

For the market: A more consistent anode material could improve performance and reliability across EVs and grid storage.

For the U.S.: A domestic supply of battery materials could reduce import dependence and strengthen the supply chain.

What’s not said: Exxon has not named where this research or production would happen.

Hydrogen headwinds vs. battery bet:
In separate updates, the company has said its planned low-carbon hydrogen and ammonia project in Baytown could face delays, citing weaker customer demand and the current federal tax-credit timeline. At the same time, leaders say battery materials look like a stronger long-term fit, even if U.S. EV sales have had some near-term dips. The company expects EV and large-scale storage demand to grow over time.

Timeline & what to watch

Now: Material in testing with some automakers (reports).

Scale-up: After the Superior Graphite asset deal closes and equipment is integrated.

Target: Commercial production around 2029, if development and demand stay on track.

Watch for: A named site location, automaker partnerships, and any pilot output news.

Friday’s Quiz: Which animal has fingerprints so similar to humans that scientists say they’re nearly indistinguishable under a microscope?
Answer: : B) Koala.
Koalas have ridged fingerprints that closely resemble human ones, to the point that under certain conditions they could look identical. However, despite popular claims, there’s no verified evidence of them ever confusing crime scene investigators.
