Good News for Oyster Lovers:
Texas Protects Reefs
with Major Buyback

If you love oysters and fresh Gulf Coast seafood, there’s good news: Texas just took its biggest step yet to protect wild oyster populations.

The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) recently purchased 112 commercial oyster licenses from harvesters in a record-setting buyback round. That’s a 21% reduction in the number of active oyster boats in the state — the most significant progress since the program began in 2018.

For years, Texas oyster reefs have been under pressure from overharvesting, hurricanes, floods, and droughts. With more licensed boats on the water than the reefs can sustain, oyster beds have struggled to recover. Fewer oysters don’t just mean fewer on your plate — healthy reefs also filter water, protect shorelines, and provide habitat for fish and marine life.

Why This Year Was Different

Previous buyback rounds had little success — only three licenses retired in the last several years combined. This time, TPWD changed its approach. Instead of letting harvesters name their price, the state offered a flat $30,000 per license.

The move was made possible through a public-private partnership with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation and donors like the Coastal Conservation Association and several Texas philanthropic foundations. Together, they raised the funds needed to make the buyback financially attractive.

Why It Matters Locally

Think about it: a family oyster operation that sells its license frees up space on the water, giving reefs a chance to bounce back. That means healthier bays, stronger marine ecosystems, and a more sustainable supply of oysters for future generations.

“This is a significant victory for conservation and an important move toward alleviating pressure on our public reefs,” said Robby Byers of CCA Texas.

TPWD’s original goal was to buy back 150 licenses, and though they fell short, the 112 secured mark a turning point. Conservationists are calling it the most consequential oyster buyback in Texas history.

👉 Bottom line: If you enjoy oysters on the half shell at a local seafood spot, this program is part of what helps keep that tradition alive. By reducing harvesting pressure today, Texas is giving wild reefs a chance to rebuild — and ensuring that Gulf Coast seafood remains part of our tables tomorrow.

Crime Stoppers Fundraiser
Brings Beatles Tribute Band
“The Fab 5” to Town 🎶

When crime happens in our community, tips to Crime Stoppers often make the difference in bringing suspects to justice. As a nonprofit, Crime Stoppers relies on community support to keep their tip lines open, reward money available, and justice within reach for victims and families.

Now, they’re turning to music to help fuel that mission.

On Sat. Oct. 25th., the Houston-based band The Fab 5 will take the stage for a special fundraiser benefiting Crime Stoppers. Known as one of the top Beatles tribute bands in the nation, The Fab 5 bring the sights and sounds of the 1960s back to life with spot-on vocals, vintage instruments, and those classic Carnaby Street fashions.

For over 35 years, they’ve entertained audiences across the country with note-for-note recreations of the Beatles’ greatest hits and other iconic tunes of the era. They’ve been featured in New Musical Express as one of the top tribute bands in America, and even include a member who toured with The Cast of Beatlemania.

It’s a chance to enjoy an evening of unforgettable music while supporting an organization that works tirelessly to keep our neighborhoods safe.
